Killarney, the Town in the Park, is a vibrant little town in the beautiful surrounding countryside of the Killarney National Park. The Ring of Kerry, a 179 km drive around the Iveragh Peninsula, has in Killarney one of its starting points.

Killarney National Park, Co Kerry, Ireland, Nov 2012 (Part III) 🇮🇪

Muckross Abbey in Killarney National Park was built in the 15th century and burned down by Cromwellian forces in 1652. The ruins have been excellently maintained by the OPW. Ross Castle, on the banks of Lough Leane, is accessible by walking and cycling routes within the National Park. It was one of the last Gaelic strongholds in Ireland. Muckross House and Gardens, just over 4 miles south of Killarney City, was built in 1843 and is near the eastern shore of Lake Muckross, with magnificent views.

With a remarkable variety of flora and fauna, Killarney National Park has a wealth of places to explore. In the oceanic climate of southwest Ireland, with its high humidity, some of the best examples of flowers and fauna in Western Europe are found. Throughout the park there are a number of trails of varying length and difficulty: Lower Lake, Upper Lake, Knockreer to Ross Island, Muckross and Dinis Cottage, Old Kenmare Road, Ross Castle and Island, Torc Waterfall.

Killarney National Park, Co Kerry, Ireland, Nov 2012 (Part I) 🇮🇪

Killarney National Park is located next to the town of Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. It was the first national park established in Ireland, covers over 100 km2, including Lakes, oak forests and mountain peaks. It has herds of red deer and the largest remaining native forest in Ireland. The park was designated a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1981.
